When AI Adoption Stalls Inside an Organization
People blame the tools. Or the training.
It’s almost never either of them.
The pattern I keep seeing: the org did the work. Deployed the tools. Made the business case.
Some teams even changed how they work. Then it stalled anyway.
The thing that got skipped is harder to answer.
It’s answering the question nobody asked out loud: what does my job actually look like on the other side of this? What do I delegate? What do I keep ?
Teams don’t resist change. They resist uncertainty.
When nobody tells them what they keep, what gets better, what becomes more valuable, they fill the silence themselves. Usually not in an optimistic way.
Per Franklin Covey: A senior leader shared this seemingly small but revealing story:
At some point, workers came in to paint the office walls. No one said anything. Morale dropped immediately. People started speculating: “Are they selling the building?” “Are we being acquired?” “Am I going to lose my job?”
The reality was simple: it was time to repaint. But without communication, it didn’t matter. People filled the silence with catastrophic stories.
Adoption doesn’t stall from lack of enthusiasm. It stalls from lack of clarity.
That’s a leadership job. The tools can’t fix this.
